Alchemical couple

1 artwork signed, consisting of 2 handcrafted playing cards with front and back, made exclusively by hand for an exceptional collaboration between Rexrattorum and Kartograme.

The fronts feature original prints from linocuts in 2 colors of a Queen of Swords and a King of Cups, reinterpreting the famous tarot Marseille cards. The artist engraver Rexrattorum, specialized in popular and religious art, expresses in a contemporary medieval style the power of symbols, figures, and archetypes referencing spiritual and biblical narratives since ancient times.

The backs are original abstract paintings created using layered glazing techniques overlaid with pearlescent and iridescent effects by Kartograme, an artisan specializing in playing card art. Their pictorial work focuses on observing chance and natural phenomena to channel and translate them in a sensitive manner. These patinas, created exclusively for this project, draw inspiration from the symbolism of encounter: encounter of natural materials - purple and indigo, encounter of complementary energies - the receptive one of the cup and the expansive one of the sword.

At the heart of the card, between the back paper and the front paper, a layer of thin, dense cardboard plays the structuring (strength) and energizing (nerve) role of a true backbone at the heart of the card. Traditional cardmakers in the 17th century shaped this material, recycled from workshop waste, and strangely called it the "Soul" of the card. For this project, the edge has been gilded to magnify the secret that unites the conscious (the face of the cards) and the unconscious (the back of the cards).

The combination of these artworks makes this alchemical couple an object of high symbolic value. The ideal gift to celebrate a couple or a gathering beyond differences. A gift for oneself to manifest tolerance in everyday life and constructive encounters.
